Fashion Blog Future and Fails

Hello, Fashionistas! I am so grateful to be able to share my passion for fashion with all of you!

As my chapter comes to a close, I would love to share some tips and tricks that I have learned in my blog journey.

If I could improve anything on my site, I would improve my graphics. Sometimes life gets busy and you can’t always focus on the small details. I would have loved to do a mini photoshoot for each post in order to give you everyone a more personalized experience.

When it comes to promoting my blog, social media is a great tool. My family and friends were able to frequently check up on my work as well. However, if I could restart I would promote on all of my platforms.

I thoroughly enjoyed being about to explore my style and help others along the way. My favorite experience was being able to show others that fashion isn’t as complicated as some may think! You can enjoy yourself along the way!

My blog has also developed my writing and storytelling skills. These are essential tools that I can utilize in my future public relations career.

I hope that my journey with this blog can help all of you as well! Making a blog is a great outlet to express what you are passionate about. Below, I will link some of my favorite blogs and fashion inspirations.

D.I.Y

Hello, Fashionistas! I am back with another exciting quarantine post. Most of us can’t go outside, so I have a great project for you! DIY fashion!

For those of you who don’t know, let me catch you up to speed! DIY stands for do it yourself. There are really no rules when it comes to DIY fashion. You can take anything and make it into something new.

You may have a few questions about DIY projects. Like “what should I DIY?” or “What do I need to have a successful project?”. I am here to answer your questions!

My favorite thing to DIY is my thrifted treasures or clothes that just don’t fit me anymore. You can take an old pair of jeans and transform it into a new cropped jean jacket! Or you can take that baggy thrifted shirt and make it into a form-fitting crop top! The possibilities are endless!

So you may be asking “what do I need now?”. There are plenty of options when it comes to DIY. Some require hand sewing or a sewing machine and some don’t require anything but scissors. For example, you can make a baggy tee-shirt into a crop top simply by cutting the bottom off.

Sewing DIY projects require a little bit more time and work. A recent project that I worked on was transforming an old sweatshirt into a crop top and shorts! Some of these projects can be tricky so I have linked a few of my favorite step-by-step videos!

Here are some ideas that you can try at home:

  1. Cut-off jean shorts: You can do this by cutting the legs off of your pants and de-stressing the raw edges.
  2. Turning a baggy shirt into a crop top
  3. Turning a long shirt into a matching set
  4. Making a crop top out of old leggings
  5. Painting a design onto old jeans

There are so many other things that you can do to upcycle your closet. I encourage you to explore and make something that you feel great in!

Thrifting for Dayz!

Hello, fashionistas! I am excited to be sharing this post with you guys because I’ll be giving some tips about my favorite topic. Thrifting!

Thrifting is great for the environment and great for your wallet. For some people, thrifting may be tricky and overwhelming, but have no fear! I have made a list of some of my most helpful tips for you to get the best possible experience.

TIPS:

  • Find the section that you are most interested in

If you are shopping in areas that you know you aren’t interested in, it can make you feel like you aren’t finding anything that you like.

  • Check over each item that you are considering purchasing

Checking for holes and stains can prevent you from buying items that aren’t worth your money.

  • Don’t be afraid to try things on!

If you aren’t sure about something, try it on! This can save you from feeling disappointed in an item when you bring it home to try on.

  • Shop locally

“Mom and Pop” thrift stores are gold mines! If you are going for a vintage look, check out these places first.

  • Ask for a discount if you feel it is necessary

Most shops are willing to negotiate on prices. If you think an item should be discounted, just ask!

  • Have Fun!

Thrifting is about having a fun experience. Try new things and expand your wardrobe!

Thrifting can be great for finding everything from unique statement pieces basics! It is a great tool for going through a “transitional” phase in your style. You can try new things without breaking the bank! What is better than that?!

I hope some of these tips help you on your journey to finding your style. Always remember that stepping out of your comfort zone is great when exploring your style. Stay safe and healthy out there!

Quarantine Quick Tips

For some of us, being in the Covid-19 quarantine might be a difficult time, especially for us extroverts who enjoy socializing regularly. However, I have the perfect remedy for boredom! Fashion!

For those of you who are new, I love to focus on the building side of fashion. How you can create a new style out of the clothes that you already have.

In this post, I am going to explore how you can spice up your loungewear!

Being stuck in the house all day can make you feel sluggish, and wearing the same PJ shirt for the last three days doesn’t help either. So what can we do to fix that? I have a few tips that may help!

Warning: Some of these tips may require a little bit of DIY ( if that isn’t something you are interested in then just skip those tips and try something you are more comfortable with).

Tip One: Make one of your oversized shirts into an off the shoulder lounge top.
You can do this by just moving it off the shoulder, or cut the collar off for a more loose fit.
This can help your loungewear feel a bit sexier rather than lazy.

Tip Two: Switch it up! Try pairing a colorful lounge top with colorful pants! Even if they are sweatpants, wearing colorful clothing can boost your mood to promote activity.

Tip Three: Monochrome moment. Start by wearing comfortable basics that are similar in color (like a dark grey sweatpant with a dark grey sweatshirt). Then add accessories! These can be anything from a comfy matching scarf to a matching headband. Having a monochrome outfit can make you feel like you are on top of things!

If all else fails, try organizing your closet. Maybe color-coding works best for your lifestyle or organized by sleeve length. Sometimes going through what you have can be good for relaxation.

Blogs, Blogs, Blogs!

Hello, Fashionistas! This blog post will be a bit different than my other posts. This time, I will be sharing some of my favorite fashion blogs with you all! Having several different sources to reference for fashion is a great way to get a fresh perspective of things. For example, finding a fashion blog for an alternative style may be a better fit for you versus reading a blog about workplace fashion.

Currently, my favorite blog is Hello Fashion. Hello Fashion is run by Christine Andrew, a mother from Colombia. Her blog is a beautiful balance of advice and pictures. The layout of her website is easy to navigate and is designed wonderfully.

Hello Fashion also has a section for food, home decor, travel, and life. She does it all!
One of the most attractive parts of her site is the images. Each post is an interactive image that you click to access the post. This keeps things interesting and fun for the reader. On top of that, the images are well planned out and aesthetically pleasing.

Some of my personal favorite posts from her site include “21 Sale Picks That Will Have You Looking Forward to the Swimsuit Season”, “15 Excuses to Shop the Post-Holiday Sales”, and “This Season’s Top Trends on Sale”.

Not only does she make fashion posts, but she also has picture presets available for purchase. Presets are filters for your photos! These presets are great to achieve the same look as her blog photos. Some of her available presets are “Island Oasis” and “Interiors”.

This is the perfect time to browse the internet for your favorite fashion blogs. Explore your options to find the best blog for you! Not every blog will have everything you need, so find several that interest you so you can get the maximum amount of inspiration possible.

Below I have linked another blog that I encourage you to check out!

Spring into Spring!

Spring into Spring!

As winter comes to an end, at least here in Texas, Spring is right around the corner. Closing the winter fashion chapter of my life has never felt so good. It’s time to pack away those turtlenecks and winter coats to make room for your Spring wardrobe! The best part of warm weather is less planning out intricate outfits. Spring is all about light, flowey, and colorful outfit choices.

In last week’s post, we learned how to build from the bottom up. Having your basics in order makes putting together outfits so much easier. Also, having a select few items of clothing that fit you perfectly can boost your confidence when it comes to stepping outside of the box with new fashion choices.

So where do we start? I think the best place to start is by looking at some of your favorite trends. What are you most interested in? There are tons of options out there that fit every style!

Some of my favorite Spring 2020 trends are:

  • Two-toned jeans: these are a fun twist on the classic jean. They can easily be dressed up or down for a fresh look.
  • Polka dots: polka dots give off a fun but classic look. Throwing in an interesting pattern can spice up any basic that you have on!
  • Blazers with bras: This trend is not for the faint of heart! The blazer with a bra trend is great for the flirty-business look. It is perfect for a shopping day in the city!
  • Monochrome looks: Monochrome looks have got to be my favorite trend of the season! It is the best way to achieve the polished look in a fun way!
  • Bold colors: Bold colors have always been a Spring favorite and they are here to stay. Nothing says “I’m ready for Spring” like a bright pink blouse paired with an orange purse.

There are endless combinations to get the perfect Spring look. The fun part is exploring your comfort levels and finding out what your true style is.

Personally, I put together my Spring wardrobe this weekend by hitting the thrift stores and online shopping! Having a small budget is no problem when looking for pieces to spice up your closet. Knowing where to look is the most important part! Next week, I will unpack the mysteries of thrifting for the sceptics out there. In the mean time, build your spring looks!

Pinterest is also a great way to get some inspiration when you are feeling a bit uncreative!

Back to the Basics

Knowing where to start is hard!

Instead of throwing you into the deep and dark abyss of fashion, we are going to start easy! Every wardrobe needs basic building blocks and layers before it can become something great.

When I first started my decent into my love for fashion I had to do some serious thinking. Here are a few questions I asked myself when I was ready to sell my soul to the fashion gods. ( jk)

  • Do the clothes that I have fit me the way that I want?
  • Are there clothes in my closet that I am willing to give away or DIY?
  • Will I wear it, or has it been in my closet for five years collecting dust?

After you have answered some of those questions, you can move on to the next step.

Putting together your favorite basics

What exactly is a basic you ask? A basic is a piece of clothing that can be wore with any outfit without distraction from your main pieces (Like a fiesty red coat or a leopard print scarf). Another question you may have is, “What are some basic essentials that I need in my closet?”. Here are just a few on my favorites

Here are just a few on my favorites:

  • A crisp white or black t-shirt
  • A good fitting light and dark wash pair of jeans
  • A white or black tank
  • A “little black dress”
  • A denim jacket
  • A black pair of leggings
  • Any neutral colored turtle neck (you will soon see that I am a turtleneck fanatic)
  • And lastly a pair of clean white sneakers of your choice

This may seem like a long and overwhelming list to some, however you most likely already have all of these items in your closet. It may take some digging, but I promise that it is worth it!

If you don’t have some of these items, thrifting is a prefect way to find affordable clothing while helping out the planet. In a future blog, I will break down some tips and tricks to a perfect thrift trip.

In the mean time, fashion is what you make of it. Starting with some good fitting basics can really go a long way. Just wearing these pieces to begin is a great way to start with a clean slate and build up!

Welcome to Style Muse!

“Fashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it” – Nicky Hilton

Hello, fellow fashionistas! My name is Autumn Atkins and I am the voice behind Style Muse! I am currently a student at Texas State University. My major is Public Relations, but my real interests are in fashion. Fashion has always been my passion and I am excited to finally be sharing that passion with ya’ll! Finding what works for you and what doesn’t is what makes fashion so fun. I am hoping that some of my tips can help you unlock your inner personal stylist.

I created Style Muse to help guide you to finding your own personal style!

  • We have all had the “I don’t have anything to wear” meltdown once or twice in our lives. However, this isn’t a “what we don’t have” problem, it’s a “how do I wear what I have” one.
  • You can transform anything you have to create something that you feel confident and happy in! It is all about perspective.

My mission with this blog is to inspire others to embrace change and connect with their creative side. Style is a reflection of who you are! I am here to help you with that journey! Fashion isn’t always about designer brands and expensive products! Let fashion become your creative outlet.

Here is some advice before we get started!

  • Don’t let the opinion of others influnece your fashion choices.
  • Wear what makes you feel good!
  • There are no rules! You can’t be afraid to break them if they don’t exist!
  • This is a journey! Rome wasn’t built in a day! Finding your way could take some time.
  • Trust the process.

Life is too short to be wearing something that doesn’t make you feel like your best self! Put your best foot forward and tackle life in something that
